Rotherham will once again come together for the annual Reclaim the Night event, marking its 10th year with a special celebration on Thursday, 21st November from 4pm to 8pm. The event will feature a series of powerful artworks created by multi-disciplinary artist Jenna Greenwood, commissioned to lead the creative process in collaboration with local communities.
Jenna Greenwood, an acclaimed artist known for her bold and playful style that blends typography, illustration, painting, and textiles, was selected by a community panel to create these new artworks. Her experience in public engagement and passion for community-led art makes her a perfect fit for Reclaim the Night.Â
Jenna shared her excitement saying: "I am delighted to be working with Flux Rotherham and members of the Rotherham community on an event as important as Reclaim the Night, combining two things I am very passionate about – banner-making and feminist issues! Â
“Growing up in Yorkshire in the 1980s, I am acutely aware of the importance of gender equality and the effect that gender-based violence can have on the local community. The banner has a firm place in the history of feminist movements, from the Suffragettes to the Women's Liberation Movement, and I hope to inspire the women and communities of Rotherham to find their voice and take to the streets."Â
The artworks will serve as banners and processional pieces during the walk, celebrating the women, trans, and non-binary residents of Rotherham. Following the event, the artworks will be displayed in shop windows around the town centre as part of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence.
