The sessions at Mowbray Gardens Library are led by local poet Vic Leeson:
"Each of the sessions will include a space to talk to each other as well as some really gentle creative writing exercises to help us put pen to paper. You may write a few words, you may write a full poem or even a paragraph describing something important to you. We can allow some time and space to share our writing if we choose to and we can also share how it is to be in a space sharing our stories and writing on the page."
Over the past four years, the project has blossomed into a mix of regular writing groups, one off sessions, lively Open Mic Nights in Wath, and the town centre and inspiring visits from celebrated poets, including the fantastic Hollie McNish last year.
2023
This year saw Spread the Word begin to grow. During this year we created a literary laundry line! The line was made of 16 original poems printed onto tea towels that toured Rotherham Libraries. Including Rawmarsh, Mowbray Gardens, Riverside, Greasborough and Wath. See the gallery below.
2024
We launched our regular open mic in Rotherham in 2024. Our first open mic took place at Grimm & Co, it was hosted by poet Matt Abbott. This open mic takes place regularly and sees new and existing poets join us to share or listen their poetry. It's always a friendly and welcoming audience. We also began to hatch plans to host poet Hollie McNish the following year. It was an ambitious plan for us, but we're pleased we decided to do something we had never done before.
2025
Brought a huge milestone: the launch of our very first anthology, Ourselves Reflected Back, featuring more than 120 poems written by local people. We celebrated in style with a special launch event at Rotherham Civic Theatre. A powerful moment showcasing the creativity, courage and talent within our community.
2026
During this year we have continued to grow our Spread the Word project. In spring we hosted Scottish award winning poet Len Pennie at Grimm & Co. We have exciting plans to host future guest poets in performances. This is alongside our continuing poetry writing sessions, that has grown to more sites across Rotherham. We've also seen poetry participants turn to facilitators and run their own sessions at local libraries. We can't wait to see the project continue to grow!
Whether you’re a lifelong poetry lover, a secret scribbler, or someone who’s never written a line before, Spread The Word is a place to connect, create and be heard. Come and join us.
