Open workshops were held at the local Wetherspoons pub, the first a paper marbling workshop responding to an artistic glasswork in the building. The second activity was a photo workshop, based on a sculpture of a former local international cricketer, broadcaster and author.

The third activity was advertised as a ‘philosophy in pubs’ activity, which saw questions circulated on beer mats during the pub’s monthly themed quiz. These asked the question, ‘If Maltby was a superhero what would it be?’ Michael Senior, a filmmaker from Rotherham, was commissioned to create an animation based on the curated responses.

A group of older people at The Vintage Booth Café, a dementia friendly, community venue created a poem about belonging and identity in Rotherham which was filmed and projected by artist Wayne Sable.

Rosie asked a residential community group of older people living at The Grange and Bevan Crescent for stories that could bring people together, and carried out a series of interviews, collecting reminiscences. Some of these were collected in the form of videos which were then used at the Maltby Jubilee Festival.

A second group took part in a philosophical discussion about work which created the stimulus for choosing ‘7 wonders of Maltby’.

About Artist in Residence

From February to June 2022, Rotherham residents had the opportunity to work with five professional artists to explore how creativity, art and culture could benefit their community. Artists Mandy Keating, Rich Wiles, Rosie Carnall and Geotone’s Andy and Paul were appointed to co-produce creative work with local people in four areas of the borough including Maltby, Wath, and two central wards.
