Participants used microphones to record sounds whilst on a walk at the site of the former Wath Main Colliery, which was closed in 1988 and regenerated into a nature reserve ten years later. This presented an opportunity to research the land use of the area over the last century that all participants could easily access.

Groups took part in a variety of activities including sharing local knowledge and artefacts, storytelling, and a mindful listening and sound manipulation exercise using effects pedals.

GeoTone used the discussion themes and sound recordings to create a 15-minute geo-located audio walk called Flux upon Dearne, available on the Echoes platform and Flux website, and when in the Bolton-Ings nature reserve. Visitors can download the app which then provides them with a sound-based experience of the history of the area as they walk through it.

Starting at a secluded, picturesque spot, the walk takes visitors back in time, from the present day to its industrial past and even back to the landscape of dense meadows and giant sheets of ice that the town of Wath would one day emerge from.

Flux Upon Dearne was created by people of all ages who live, visit and work in Wath. All credits to the stories, songs and sounds visitors will hear go to them.

About Artist in Residence

From February to June 2022, Rotherham residents had the opportunity to work with five professional artists to explore how creativity, art and culture could benefit their community. Artists Mandy Keating, Rich Wiles, Rosie Carnall and Geotone’s Andy and Paul were appointed to co-produce creative work with local people in four areas of the borough including Maltby, Wath, and two central wards.
