The Gallery Town platform champions the wealth of artistic talent within the local area and showcases large scale artworks in outdoor locations across Rotherham.

Our focus remains on the creation of locally led artwork by high-quality professional artists, involving children, young people, and adults from the community.

What we are doing

Since summer 2025, new artworks have been appearing across Rotherham. We’re busy working behind the scenes with artists, community groups and schools to create new original works.

Gallery Town will become an evolving collection of murals, sculptures, wall-based, and other playful public artworks. These collaborative works will become part of Gallery Town’s reimagining, with new artworks installed across Rotherham’s most recognisable locations, including All Saints’ Square, Bailey House, The Three Cranes pub on High Street, and Rotherham Civic Theatre.

The artworks reflect a diverse range of artistic expression, including words, digital media, and three-dimensional forms.

How it started

The project started in 2012 as an innovative regeneration project set up by a collective of local business leaders. An ambitious undertaking, to create the largest open-air Art Gallery in the UK. It mainly focussed on sharing reproductions of art on buildings across the town centre by schoolchildren, students, local artists and internationally renowned masters. In more recent years, Gallery Town created the large-scale Camellia Sculpture in Rotherham Town Centre with support from Arts Council project funding.

Within the revised town centre development plan, new sites for Gallery Town are being identified along the riverbank development, and around or within the new markets area.

Partners

FLUX Rotherham will be working with some of the original Gallery Town Directors, alongside partners at ROAR (Rotherham Open Arts Renaissance), Rotherham Arts Museums and Heritage, Wentworth Woodhouse Preservation Trust, Grimm & Co and Children’s Capital of Culture to create new co-produced artworks with professional artists and community groups, schools and colleges.

Artists
