A striking new mural celebrating the history, wildlife and changing seasons of Thrybergh Country Park has been unveiled, following a collaboration between FLUX Rotherham, Rotherham Council and artists UNFURL.

Titled Flourish, the large-scale artwork has transformed a prominent wall within the park and was created following community engagement with local residents, visitors and park users. Their stories, memories and connections to the landscape played a key role in shaping the final design.

At the heart of the mural are swans, one of the park's most recognisable and much-loved residents. Alongside them are yellow canaries and swallows, representing both the area's rich heritage and its natural environment. The canaries are a nod to Thrybergh's coal mining past, while the swallows reference the important role birds play as indicator species, helping researchers understand the health of ecosystems and habitats.

The artwork also features four decorative panels representing the changing seasons. During conversations with local people, many spoke about visiting the park throughout the year and enjoying the way the landscape evolves through the seasons. These stories inspired a series of images showing the cycle of nature, from sowing seeds in spring and enjoying summer blooms to harvesting autumn fruits and resting through winter.

Further inspiration came from the historic St Leonard's Church, with the shapes of its stained-glass windows reflected within the mural's design. The seasonal figures also draw influence from the work of Art Nouveau artist Alphonse Mucha, whose celebrated Four Seasons series explores themes of nature, beauty and renewal.

The mural is completed with illustrations of British wildflowers found within the park's wildflower garden, creating a colourful tribute to the area's biodiversity and the community's affection for this much-loved green space.

The commission forms part of FLUX Rotherham's ongoing commitment to bringing high-quality public art into local communities and creating opportunities for residents to shape the cultural landscape of the borough.

FLUX Rotherham would like to thank artists UNFURL, Rotherham Council, the staff at Thrybergh Country Park and Café, and everyone who contributed their ideas and inspiration throughout the project.

Visitors can now enjoy Flourish as part of their next visit to Thrybergh Country Park.
