Ferham Festival Artist Commissions

Ferham Festival Artist Commissions

Flux Rotherham is looking for artists (Vocal musician and Dance Practitioner) to work in a local primary school to provide musical and movement engagement inspired by Sonia Sabri’s “Mughal Miniatures” which will be performed at the Ferham Festival in August this year.

Ferham Festival is a much-loved community event which happens on Ferham Park in the centre of the community. FLUX Rotherham has been supporting the community to grow and develop the festival over the last 2 years, in partnership with Rotherham United Community Trust.

Over the last two years, we have introduced a musical and dance stage which has had a high-quality programme of professional bands, BBC Asian Network DJs and dance performances, plus workshops and creative activities on the day for people to participate in and new outdoor arts offer- selected by a representative community panel.

Ferham Festival celebrates local stories, imagery, songs, and people, celebrating the rich and diverse local and global history and the melting pot of language, art and performance brought in by newer global residents.

In 2025, Rotherham will become the first Children’s Capital of Culture, a concept created by children and young people in Rotherham back in 2017.

To build Ferham Festival up to this, we are looking for artists to work in a local primary school to provide musical and movement engagement inspired by Sonia Sabri’s “Mughal Miniatures” which will be performed at the festival in August this year. ‘Mughal Miniatures’ is dynamic, colourful, and fun, and captures the imaginations of all ages.  Traditional and folkloric artistry collide with more modern and urban forms, approaching notions of heritage in a more inclusive way that can chime with audiences of diverse backgrounds.

Professional musicians/ global majority dancers will work with children in local primary school(s) connect them to music and performance drawing on the musical traditions and stories prevalent in the local communities. This should draw on the storytelling style contained in Mughal Miniatures.

We are particularly interested in working with music and dance genres from Roma and/or South Asian communities. Your work should be engaging, accessible to children and give a flavour of what Ferham Festival is about. The successful artists will run 6 sessions during the school term time 19th July 2024.

We are happy to accept proposals from individual dance practitioners/ musicians happy to work together or from existing collaboratives.
